It is no secret that the introduction of the Tesla Model 3 played a pivotal role in accelerating the adoption of electric cars, writes Tim Barnes-Clay.
With its accessible, high-performance, and technologically advanced features, the Model 3 successfully appealed to a broader audience, helping to shift perceptions about electric vehicles from niche to mainstream.
Now, several years after the first Model 3 rolled off the assembly line, Tesla has updated the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive and Long-Range All-Wheel Drive models. This update provides more refinement and comfort, both inside and out, while remaining true to the sleek, uncluttered design that made the Model 3 a global best-seller.
The enhanced Tesla retains its reputation for excellent range and efficiency while delivering good performance and handling at an approachable price point. With a refined body, improved aerodynamics, new lighting, and a fresh interior, the Model 3 remains instantly recognisable while elevating what families love about it.
The headlamps and taillights boast a new aesthetic and bright colours. The updated styling is seamlessly integrated into the liftgate to improve fit, enhancing the Model 3’s already cool kerbside presence.
One of the most noticeable changes is the ushering in of two new colours – Ultra Red and Stealth Grey. Ultra Red, a high-chroma shade, and Stealth Grey, a dark metallic grey, certainly add a new level of customisation potential.
Aerodynamic optimisations and redesigned wheels and tyres have enhanced the Model 3’s overall efficiency. These improvements reduce drag and wind noise and contribute to increased range, culminating in a drag coefficient of 0.219.
Beyond its exterior, the interior of the Model 3 has undergone a significant transformation. It has been redesigned to focus on comfort, convenience, and connectivity.
The cabin architecture now vaunts premium materials, such as real aluminium and textiles, with newly designed seats featuring ventilation and integrated heating as standard. The centre console has been revamped to include expansive storage and dual wireless phone chargers, complemented by a bright and responsive 15.4″ centre display.
Furthermore, the cabin now incorporates customisable ambient lighting, a super-quiet atmosphere achieved through acoustic glass and improved noise isolation, and a studio-quality premium audio system with support for popular music streaming services.
The front seats are spacious, so even lofty drivers won’t be found moaning about a dearth of headroom or legroom. Indeed, the minimalist cabin and glass roof help, as the decluttered interior gives the impression of even more room.
Three adults in the back is a squeeze, but three kids is no problem. Plus, a flat floor means the middle-seat passenger doesn’t have to straddle a hump on the floor.
The boot space measures 594 litres. It offers bags of underfloor storage – although that figure is divided between the rear boot and another storage space under the Tesla’s bonnet (known as a ‘frunk’). The actual rear boot capacity is 425 litres and increases significantly by folding the rear seats.
The driving experience has also been refined, with Tesla’s Autopilot technology streamlining various aspects of vehicle operation. Notably, the gear-shifting process has been automated, and stalks have been replaced with steering wheel controls, providing an uncluttered driving experience.
The enriched connectivity features, including improved phone call quality and connectivity performance, further elevate the overall driving experience.
The Model 3’s single motor version has a 60kWh (57.3kWh usable) battery, which is good enough for a claimed 318-mile range. The rear-wheel drive version we’re testing can charge at a maximum rate of 170kW. That means it can achieve a 10 to 80% top-up of the batteries in less than half an hour. A zero to 100% charge using a 7kW wall box at home will take around nine hours.
In conclusion, the upgraded Tesla Model 3 represents a leap forward in electric vehicle tech, offering superior performance, cutting-edge design, and driving convenience.
With its extensive improvements across every facet, the Model 3 reaffirms Tesla’s position at the forefront of the electric vehicle industry, setting a fresh standard for what an electric family-sized vehicle can be. For more information and to book a test drive – click here.
