As electrification continues to gain momentum, compact electric SUVs are becoming increasingly popular, writes Tim Barnes-Clay.
According to Skoda, the new Elroq, the smaller sibling to the Enyaq, is one of the most affordable electric vehicles in its class. It is essentially the electric counterpart to the traditional Karoq.
During our test drive in Mallorca, we sampled the top-of-the-line SportLine 85 model, equipped with an 82kWh (77kWh net) battery that delivers an impressive range of 360 miles. The Elroq features Skoda’s latest ‘Modern Solid’ design language, notable for its innovative black ‘Tech-Deck Face’ that replaces the conventional grille. Its unique appearance includes headlights that evoke the image of four eyes and Skoda lettering on the bonnet in place of a badge. The SportLine variant stands out with its 20-inch black alloy wheels, matrix LED headlights, distinct bumpers, and gloss black detailing.
Sticking to the trend of most electric vehicles, the Elroq utilises a single-speed transmission with the electric motor placed on the rear axle, providing immediate power to the back wheels. The 85 model’s performance is exhilarating, achieving 0 to 62 mph in just 6.6 seconds. Additionally, its aerodynamic design allows for a maximum speed of 111 mph, boasting a drag coefficient of 0.26.
One of the Elroq’s key attributes is its smooth cruising capability. With solid build quality and effective acoustic insulation, it efficiently handles motorway speeds, minimising tyre noise and wind turbulence. However, it’s not without its drawbacks. The stiffer suspension and shock absorbers on the SportLine version offer sportier handling, which enhances grip and body control but results in a firmer ride. This can make it feel less composed over rough rural roads or uneven urban surfaces. Nevertheless, this is a minor issue, quickly forgotten when you experience the Elroq’s impressive turning radius, making town and village driving a breeze.
The Elroq features high-quality materials and rugged construction, comfortably seating five passengers. Rear legroom is generous; even a six-footer can sit behind another of the same height without their knees digging into the back of the front seats. The boot space is ample at 470 litres, expanding to 1,580 litres when the rear seats are folded. Additionally, Skoda’s ‘Simply Clever’ attributes enhance practicality, providing innovative storage solutions, such as dedicated compartments for charging cables.
The SportLine’s interior embraces a dark theme with black sports seats featuring integrated head restraints in microsuede and faux leather. A three-spoke steering wheel adds to the sporty ambience, highlighted by carbon fibre-like dashboard trim and stainless-steel pedals.
The infotainment system comprises a 13-inch touchscreen that offers an intuitive experience with a straightforward menu and responsive touch capability. In a refreshing twist, it also includes a strip of physical buttons, making operation more straightforward while driving. Skoda’s voice assistant, Laura, has been upgraded with Chat GPT support, allowing for engaging interactions that functioned seamlessly during our drive.
Skoda has a well-deserved reputation for crafting quality, value-oriented vehicles, and the Elroq upholds this legacy. It provides an enjoyable driving experience alongside an impressive range. With charging capabilities of up to 175 kW at DC fast-charging stations, the Elroq 85’s battery can go from 10% to 80% in less than half an hour.
As Skoda’s initial foray into the compact SUV electric market, the Elroq stands out as a compelling option for those searching for a family-sized EV that will handle the school run as competently as a motorway.
The sun-soaked roads of Mallorca showcased its capabilities beautifully, making for a memorable driving experience.
