Seeing as we’re doing so well at the moment, why not relieve England’s greatest World Cup moments?
While England hasn’t had the best run at the World cup in recent years, we’ve certainly had our fair share of glorious moments at the tournament. To celebrate this year’s event in Russia, here’s a rundown of the England’s greatest World Cup moments.
5. Bryan Robson scores in 27 Seconds – 1982
While England went on to win 3-1 against France in this group fixture, it all started with an outrageous goal from Bryan Robson. It remains one of the fastest goals in the history of the tournament.
4. David Platt puts England through to the quarters – 1990
David Platt memorably scored after this winning goal after coming on as a sub against Belgium. His fabulous last second volley in extra time put England on their way to achieve their second best placing ever at the World Cup.
3. Michael Owen scores against Argentina – 1998
Okay, so England went on to lose 2-1 against Argentina. But this is still recognised as one of the best goals in English history. Just 18 years old at the time, Michael Own’s incredible pace allowed him to out sprint numerous players to land this extraordinary goal.
2. David Beckham’s free kick against Greece – 2001
While Beckham scored a memorable goal against Argentina during the 2002 World Cup, it was his goal in this qualifier against Greece that was truly unforgettable. Redeeming himself after getting sent off in ’98, Becks bended the ball in the 90th minute against Greece to get us into the World Cup.
1. England win the World Cup! – 1966
How could number one be anything but this? It’s still the most watched event in the history of British television. England won 4-2 against West Germany to hold the trophy in their home turf of Wembley Stadium. Geoff Hurst’s hat trick sealed the deal. The legendary hat trick included his controversial second goal (did it cross the line?) and that incredible last-minute goal in extra time.
