CARS REVIEWS: MAXDA RX8
MAXDA RX8

Any genuine sportscar that can handle corners as stylishly as it accommodates my mother-in-law, wife and five-month-old daughter has got to be worth investigation. The Mazda RX-8 is such a car and definitely worth a look at by any parent in need of a sporty car that can also be truly practical.

For £20,995 the entry-level RX-8 gives a 7.2-second 0-62mph, great handling, six airbags, a six-disc CD changer and nine speakers, four proper seats that are as accessible as they are comfortable, and two unique selling points – an award-winning new take on the Wankel rotary engine and superaccess ‘suicide doors’... and there’s no need to be alarmed by either.

The first USP creates a powerful 189bhp from what is, in very simple terms, equivalent to only a 1.3-litre capacity engine. The RX-8’s ‘1.3’ revs, accelerates and acts like a much bigger unit while promising reasonable economy.

ISOFIX systems). This technology ensure the back doors can only open when the front ones are already open, stopping unwanted rear passenger spillages. Despite the generously sized and stylish interior – boot space has not been neglected. Unlike the serious limitations of a similarly sporty Toyota MR-2 or Lotus Elise, the RX-8’s 290-litre boot takes a pram and a few weekend bags with ease – or two golf bags – the acid test in car boot terms. With all this practicality you might expect me to
reveal that the RX-8 is really a mini- MPV in disguise. Fear not. Mazda’s new sportscar really is a rival to the Audi TT, Nissan 350Z, Chrysler Crossfire and BMW 3- series coupe on looks and driving characteristics. But with the help of its accessible extra seats and keen pricing it beats them all on everyday versatility, innovation and cost.

Even in bright red exterior with red, black and chrome interior, driving the RX-8 does not feel like you’re trying too hard. You’re just a dad who wants a car that goes fast and can take your family with you. Sports cars and babies have never mixed too well, but maybe the RX-8 is the exception that proves the rule.
