DVD: ALIEN VS PREDATOR (15)
Put out the cat, put the kids to bed, dim the lights and switch your brain into neutral because it’s time to be entertained lobotomy style. Shark vs bear, Superman vs Spiderman, Jason vs Freddy – there is something deeply anal and childlike in us all that demands to know the outcome of these hypothetical battles. In the case of Predator vs Alien, the onus has fallen on director Paul W.S. Anderson, whose previous oeuvre has included Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil, to resolve this burning issue.
A simultaneous sequel to Alien and prequel to Predator, this video game inspired gore fest is set in an ancient pyramid beneath Antarctic ice that has just been discovered by an expedition of unsuspecting scientists. What they don’t know is that within this buried temple lies a giant mother Alien just waiting to breed new face-hugging offspring. The Aliens have been hatched on command to provide prey for a new group of Predator hunters, who have to earn their stripes by killing their species’ most dangerous foe. And so the fun begins with plot, dialogue and acting swiftly flying out the window as Anderson focuses solely on serving us all a dripping slice of carnage pie… and very tasty it is too. Expect seconds soon. Alien vs Predator is out to buy and rent on DVD and video from 7th March 2005.
